A-10 Afghanistan Combat Summary for April 2010

From the "Airpower Summaries", released as U.S. Air Forces Central press releases on USAFCENT's official public website, for April 2010 I extracted and edited all available info related to A-10 Thunderbolt II combat missions in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom). The mostly daily airpower summaries for OEF and OIF are provided by Combined Air and Space Operations Center (CAOC) officials at Al Udeid AB, Qatar.

In March 2010, the 104th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron (104th EFS), deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) from the 175th Wing (Maryland ANG), Martin State Airport, to the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing (451st AEW) at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, was replaced by elements from the 184th Fighter Squadron, 188th Fighter Wing (Arkansas ANG), Fort Smith, and probaly currently deployed as 184th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron (184th EFS) - but at least now not official confirmed.

A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of force to gauge enemy movement in the vicinity of the friendly forces.

Surkhabad, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of presence to prevent enemy fire from a compound then made a cannon-fire strafing run that ended enemy fire from an adjacent enemy fighting position. Pilots also conducted shows of force to ensure no further enemy fire occurred. All actions were successful in meeting the ground commander's intent.

April 5:

Gereshk, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots, Coalition aircrews and U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet aircrews provided armed overwatch and responded to friendly ground forces under attack by enemy forces. A-10 pilots made a strafing run, successfully ending enemy fire and Coalition aircrews released a missile against enemy forces. In addition F-18E aircrews and A-10 pilots conducted several shows of force, one with flares launched to deter further enemy activity.

Surkhabad, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch of friendly forces. The aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, which was determined successful by ground controllers.

April 8:

Sol Tani, Regional Command-East
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces convoy returning to its base. Pilots conducted shows of presence to deter any potential enemy aggression against the convoy. The shows of presence were successful as no enemy action was noted.

Abu Kala, Regional Comand-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for a friendly-forces patrol and surveillance over a village for suspicious activity. Pilots conducted a show of presence. The show of presence was declared successful by ground forces.

April 9:

Balocan, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for a friendly forces operation. Pilots conducted a show of force to deter enemy action in the area. The show of force, with flares launched, was determined successful.

Tarin Kowt, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and conducted a show of force that was declared successful by ground controllers. However, a short time later, friendly forces reported further enemy small-arms fire. Pilots conducted several more shows of force, some with flares launched, in the area but enemy fire continued. Pilots followed up with numerous strafing runs using cannon fire against the enemy fighting position, which successfully ended enemy fire. U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots also conducted a show of force to deter further enemy fire. The show of force was deemed successful.

Farah, Regional Command-West
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces and conducted a show of force, which was declared successful.

April 14:

Parmakan, Regional Command-West
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots conducted shows of presence, with flares launched, to deter enemy action in the area. The shows of presence were declared successful

Gereshk, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. A show of force was conducted to deter enemy small-arms fire in the vicinity of friendly forces. The show of force was deemed successful by Joint Tactical Air Controllers when no enemy action occurred

April 15:

Balocan, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. At the direction of friendly ground forces, pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy action. The shows of force were reported successful.

April 16:

Kandahar, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots conducted shows of force to deter enemy activity. A joint terminal attack controller reported the shows of force as successful.

April 17:

Tarin Kowt, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted a show of presence, with flares launched, to deter enemy activity in vicinity of the friendly forces. Ground control confirmed the show of force was successful.

Oruzgan, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. When a public uprising was observed with nearby enemy forces possibly carrying rocket-propelled grenades, shows of force were conducted to deter enemy action in the area. The shows of force, with flares launched, were declared successful by joint terminal attack controllers.

April 22:

Gereshk, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, when friendly forces received sporadic enemy small-arms fire. The show of force was declared successful by ground controllers once enemy fire ceased.

Kandahar, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy aggression along a road. The show of force was confirmed successful by ground controllers.

April 23:

Farah, Regional Command-West
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces during an exfiltration operation. Pilots conducted a show of force, which was called successful by joint terminal attack controllers.

April 24:

Ghazni, Regional Command-East
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots and F-15E aircrews provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Aircrews and pilots conducted shows force to deter anti-Afghan activity. Ground controllers declared the shows of force successful.

April 25:

Tarin Kowt, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided close air support for friendly forces. Pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, and deterred enemy actions while friendly forces were in the area.

April 26:

Chahar Bagh, Regional Command-East
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, over an enemy firing point to deter enemy aggression. The show of force was confirmed successful by joint terminal attack controllers.

April 27:

Surkhabad, Regional Command-East
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. The pilots conducted shows of force to deter enemy fire in the vicinity of friendly forces. The shows of force were declared successful by joint terminal attack controllers.

April 28:

Qalat, Regional Command-East
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of presence, with flares launched, to deter enemy aggression. The show of presence was confirmed successful by ground controllers

Kandahar, Regional Command-South
A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces during an operation. Pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, to deter potential enemy action. The show of force was confirmed successful by joint terminal attack controllers.

April 29:

Chahar Bagh, Regional Command-East
Coalition and A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy aggression. The shows of force were confirmed successful by joint terminal attack controllers.

April 30:

Sangin, Regional Command-South
U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted a show of force, with flares launched, which was confirmed successful by ground controllers.

Later, A-10 Thunderbolt II pilots provided armed overwatch for friendly forces. Pilots conducted shows of force, with flares launched, to deter enemy activity. Ground controllers declared the shows of force successful.
